Vernon Albers had been associated with colleges and universities for most of his adult life. In his earlier career he taught physics in a college one-third of the time, while two-thirds of his time was devoted to biophysics research. During World War II he worked at the Harvard Underwater Sound Laboratory where the work was in acoustics. From 1950, he was primarily involved in research administration. In 1954 he became Chief Scientist at the Ordnance Research Laboratory at Penn State University. Since then a considerable amount of his time was devoted to technical writing. He has directed two NATO sponsored institutes on Underwater Acoustics, the first held in London in 1961 and the second held in Copenhagen in 1966. Mr. Albers had always had an interest in woodworking and had, for thirty-five years, nearly always had a project of repair or construction of a piece of furniture in progress. The major pieces which he constructed included three harpsichords, a grandfather clock, a pair of Sheraton banquet tables, a Virginia highboy and a Hepplewhite hunt-board. Mr. Albers was the author of Amateur Furniture Construction, The Repair and Reupholstering of Old Furniture and The World of Sound.
