Luis Marcelino Gómez

Luis Marcelino Gómez (Ciudad de Holguín, 1950). Writer, psychiatrist and Ph.D in Spanish. He practiced medicine in Angola, where he wrote the first African short story collection written by a Latin American in Africa. He worked as a professor of Spanish and Portuguese at various universities in the United States. At the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he created and taught the first Course of Creative Writing in Spanish in that educational institution and is the Editor in Chief of the bilingual journal Aguas del Pozo/Waters of the Well dedicated only to the short story genre. He has published several books of poetry, the last Como mi hermano el salmón (Like my Brother the Salmon) (USA, 2021), essays and three collections of short stories: Donde el Sol es Más Rojo (Where the Sun is More Red) (USA, 1994), Oneiros (USA, 2002), and Cuando Llegaron los Helechos (When the Ferns Arrived) Monte Ávila Editores Latinoamericana (Venezuela, 2009). He was one of the authors chosen by Letras Cubanas for the anthology Isla tan Dulce y Otras Historias: Cuentos Cubanos de la Diáspora (Island so Sweet and Other Stories: Cuban Short Stories from the Diaspora, Havana, 2002). In 1985 he received a National Short Story Award in Havana, Cuba, whose jury was chaired by Onelio Jorge Cardoso. In 2007, he was finalist in the Juan Rulfo Short Story Prize in Paris, France. Additionally, he has published narrative, essay and poetry in journals of Africa, Europe, the Americas and the Middle East. He also has several novels and collections of unpublished stories.
