Byron Alexander Griffith earned his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto (Canada) in 1937. His dissertation was titled On the Steady Two-Dimensional Flow of a Viscous Liquid past a Fixed Circular Cylinder. He went on to join the staff of the University of Toronto as Associate Professor of Mathematics. In 1942, he co-authored Principles of Mechanics with his former Advisor, John Lighton Syngh.
