Luc B. Innocent was a leader of the Revolutionary Union Movement in Haiti and an active opponent of the Francois Duvalier regime. Innocent spent years exiled in Venezuela. In 1986, he returned to Haiti, and in 1987 launched his campaign for the presidency in the November 1987 election. On October 8, 1988, he was assassinated by the Haitian military in Fonds-Verrettes, near the Dominican border. Despite requests from several Haitian human rights organizations, the government has declined to investigate the killing of Innocent.
