Laurence Walter Meynell wrote over 150 books. He was born in Wolverhampton, the son of Herbert Meynell and his wife Agnes Mary Sollom; he became a professional writer in the 1920s. A contemporary satire Mockbeggar from 1924 won the Harrap fiction prize. Meynell wrote juvenile literature as Valerie Baxter and A. Stephen Tring. He also wrote detective fiction, with recurring private eye character Hooky Hefferman.
