John XXIII Pope

Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, geboren am 25. November 1881 in Sotto il Monte (Provinz Bergamo), begann im Jahre 1900 seine theologischen Studien in Rom, wo er 1904 zum Priester geweiht wurde. Von 1905 bis 1914 Sekretär seines Bischofs, während des Krieges Sanitätsunteroffizier und Lazarettpfarrer, danach Professor am Priesterseminar in Bergamo. 1921 berief ihn Benedikt XV. zum Präsidenten des Päpstlichen. Werkes für die Glaubensverbreitung in Italien. 1925 zum Erzbischof erhoben und als Apostolischer Visitator nach Bulgarien entsandt; seit 1931 Apostolischer Delegat. 1934 vertauschte er dieses Amt mit dem des Apostolischen Delegaten für die Türkei und Griechen-land. Ab 1944 Nuntius in Frankreich. Im Jahre 1953 wurde Roncalli zum Kardinal und zum Patriarchen von Venedig erho-ben. Am 25. Oktober 1958 trat er ins Konklave ein, und am 28. Oktober ging er als Papst Johannes XXIII. daraus hervor. Am Pfingstmontag, dem 3. Juni 1963, ging er heim zu Gott.
