Nach einem historischen Rundgang um die Insel Euböa befasst sich die Abhandlung im ersten Teil mit der Sage von dem Centaur Chiton in der antiken Literatur (6.?3. Jh. v. Chr.) und den archäologischen Funden in Lefkandi zum Nachweis, dass die Sage bereits in den "Dunklen Jahrhunderten" (11. Jh. v. Chr.) bekannt war. Sodann wird das Schicksal der Städte Eretria und Chalkis im ersten vorchristlichen Jahrtausend anhand der archäologischen Funde und der historischen Überlieferung vom Lelantischen Krieg bis zur Römerzeit beschrieben.
