The value and joy of reading and learning from such material as this brings one about as close as can be expected to the original and fist hand experiences and source material as can be had. One can almost place themselves among the troops of Cortes or even in the shoes of Dias as they make their way in unknown territory and deal with skirmishes and battles with the natives in and around Mexico. In these pages we have a rich source of information as to the customs and culture of the original natives--their weapons and means of warfare and a slight peek into their religious practices. Also of interest is the many squabbles and disputes in and among the various ranks of the Spaniards--their attempts to find favor with their king.
