Preface
This book is written for all enlisted men of the U. S. Navy. As part of the Navy training courses program it is intended to give men an understanding of the history and development of the Navy and an appreciation of the Navy's role in our national history.
Beginning with a chapter on old world navies, the book quickly takes the reader to the beginning of the American Navy in the Revolutionary War. Succeeding chapters carry through the campaigns of the Barbary Coast, the War of 1812, and up to the Civil War. The Civil War chapters cover fully the actions of both Union Navy and Confederate Navy and show how the lessons of the Industrial Revolution affected sea power during that war. A brief chapter on the Spanish American War and a longer chapter on the Navy's part in the First World War brings the reader to the concluding chapters covering World War II. Throughout the book, the story of your Navy is told in a colorful and dynamic style that makes this history exceptionally readable.
Acknowledgement is accorded Mr. Theodore Roscoe, author of the major part of the book, which, as one of the navy training courses, was prepared by the Training Courses Section; and many original illustrations were prepared by the Illustrators' Unit, Standards and Curriculum Division of the Bureau of Naval Personnel.
Credit and thanks for many other illustrations are due to the following agencies and collections: Bureau of Aeronautics, Coast Guard Official Photographs, Franklin Institute, Historical Society of New York City, Marine Corps Official Photographs, Mariners' Museum of Newport News, National Archives, National Park Service, Naval Records and Library, New York Times, and Official Navy Photographs.
