An act of Congress in 1978 that ended the regulation by the Amateur Athletic Unon of those amateur sports in America which were approved for participation in sanctioned international competition and the internationl Olympics and permitting each sport to establish their own governing body that would promulate rules which would ensure allowable participation in international sports approved by the international governing bodies and the Iternational Olympic Commitee.
The 'Act' did allow the Amateur Athletic Union to retain the rights to use the term "Junior Olympics" for an annual sports festival for sports approved for the the internationl Olympics involvng a multiplicity of athletes not older than eighteen (18) years of age at a specific cut-of date.
