Vol. 2 of the 3-v. set published by Collier beginning in 1904.
T.p. in black and orange; title vignette is a small black and orange version of the front cover centerpiece portrait of Sherlock Holmes.
Five illustrations by Frederic Dorr Steele, including a black and orange frontispiece portrait of Sherlock Holmes, with caption "Solving a problem", and signed "Steele 03". Remaining four black and white illustrations are part of The Sign of the Four.
Contemporary blind-stamped dark gray cloth binding; Steele's portrait of Sherlock Holmes smoking a pipe stamped in black and gold, and signed by the engraver "DD", in center of upper board.
