Port Arthur had just opened as a prison in Van Dieman's Land in 1830. Transportees who were sent to Port Arthur were considered violent and dangerous, but not without hope of reform. David Burn (1798-1895, sometimes referred to as Edmund David Burn), wrote this book to reflect his observations of his visit to Port Arthur in 1842.
