Brand Whitlock (1869-1934) was the son of a Methodist minister who moved from town to town in Ohio. Brand started as a newspaper reporter and became a celebrated lawyer. He served four terms as mayor of Toledo (1906-1914) and then was appointed U.S. Minister to Belgium during WWI. Throughout his career he published many works, both non-fiction and fiction.
