Thomas Newton, later Bishop of Bristol, Samuel Johnson\u2019s friend from his schooldays, included several of William Lauder\u2019s forged \u2018parallels\u2019 in the notes to this magisterial edition of Paradise Lost. However, it contains the forger\u2019s retraction in a a stop-press \u2018Postscript\u2019 dated 5 December 1750 (vol. 2, ff. Ff1-4), in which Newton discusses Lauder\u2019s attack on Milton and his later confession.
