En 1935, Jacques Lemaigre Dubreuil, patron des huiles Lesieur, entre dans la vie publique française en prenant la présidence de la très droitière Fédération des contribuables. Son engagement en faveur de l'indépendance du Maroc lui vaut d'être assassiné à Casablanca, le 11 juin 1955, par des "contre-terroristes" français. Entre-temps, il a participé activement à ce que le président Auriol appelait "la résistance africaine" en préparant la voie aux débarquements alliés de novembre 1942 et en jouant auprès du général Giraud le rôle de conseiller politique.
