Vivant dans une société marquée par le fait religieux, romancier s’attachant à évoquer tous les aspects de la vie sous le second Empire dans la fresque des Rougon-Macquart, Zola ne pouvait pas ne pas rencontrer les problèmes religieux. Deux romans leur sont entièrement, ou presque, consacrés : La conquête de Plassans et La faute de l’abbé Mouret. Mieux encore dans la série des Trois villes-Lourdes, Rome et Paris. C’est donc dans ces trois livres que s’exprime le plus clairement la pensée de Zola sur le catholicisme. Il nous en a assez dit pour nous permettre d’approcher ses positions religieuses.
