Copy of a letter from an American diplomatic character in France, to a member of Congress in Philadelphia

Published 1798 by Printed [by James Lyon?] on Constitution-Hill. in [Fairhaven, Vt.?] .
Written in English.

Edition Notes

A criticism of Jay's Treaty and an appeal for better relations with France. Written by Joel Barlow and addressed to Abraham Baldwin

According to an unsigned letter in the Connecticut courant of Nov. 5, 1798, this pamphlet "was printed at Matthew Lyon's press in Fairhaven." Ascribed by Bristol to the Fairhaven, Vt., press of Lyon's son James

The printing of Barlow's Letter was the basis of the third count in the indictment of Matthew Lyon under the Sedition Act. Lyon denied printing the letter, stating that the text was obtained from his wife by an unnamed printer during Lyon's absence, and that he endeavored to suppress the edition. Cf. Annals of Congress, 11th Congress, 1st sess., col. 122-126, and 16th Congress, 2nd sess., col. 478

BAL entry 896 records a broadside reprint of the letter; the present edition is mentioned in a note but described as "unlocated."
