This novel follows the story of William Stoner. Born a poor Missouri farmer, Stoner ventures to the University of Missouri to study agronomy. At university Stoner discovers a latent love of English literature and decides to peruse the path of the academic. As time passes a series of disappointments forces Stoner to live more and more inside himself.
