Edition Notes

"Printed for private circulation."

Although the title page is dated 1869, with the statement "Second edition, revised," this is evidently a later publication. The special title page for "An essay on the steam-boiler" is dated in the lower right corner, "April, 1870." This may have been a very limited ed. made up for Harrison to give to his friends.

The portrait frontispiece is signed: Eng'd by John Sartain Phila.

"I have written the verses ... entitled the 'Iron worker and King Solomon" ... [to illustrate] the photograph, taken from a picture ... called the "Iron worker," painted for me four or five years ago by Christian Schuessele. The story from which the picture is painted will be found ... [in] the appendix, in which will also be found another version of the story ... furnished to me by my friend, Mr. Charles G. Leland"--Page vii (1st group).

The second leaf of plates is a mounted photographic print of Schuessele's painting.
