Oliver Johnson writes to William Lloyd Garrison informing him that he has received Garrison's latest article, but that he has been obliged to delay publication to the present week. Johnson states in confidence that Theodore Tilton will be departing the Independent by the end of the year at latest, and that he himself has resigned his post. Johnson states his belief that the change in tone of the paper under new management will be "positively orthodox", with any and all "heretics" relegated to the "back seats and cold corners", if permitted to write for the paper at all.
