About the Book

Over the Schuylkill: Aughts Philly Complete offers a comprehensive summary of the work of several groups of young American artists in Philadelphia in the Aughts. These artists constituted the hub of what here is called The Philadelphia Renaissance. Special emphasis is given to The Philly Free School, a nexus of painters, poets, and musicians who worked through the Aughts in Philadelphia.

Excerpts

Philadelphia, much more so than New York (which offers, to my eyes, nothing labyrinthine beneath a bold, brusque surface) is perpetually ravaged by contradictions and conflicting internal imperatives...the representatively Philadelphian surface/depth tensions are what make the city fertile ground for high art...much of America's internal darkness is mirrored with precision in our labyrinths here.
