Edition Notes

Issued as 2nd voyage in vol. 15 of: Naaukeurige versameling der gedenk-waardigste zee en land-reysen na Oost en West-Indiën / collected and printed by Peter van der Aa, Leyden, 1707.

Translation of the author's: Histoire d'un voyage fait en la terre du Brésil, first printed La Rochelle, 1578.

The author gives an account of Nicolas Durand de Villegagnon's colony in Brazil and the Tupi Indians who inhabited the country.

This edition lacks the "Colloque de l'entree ou arriuee en la terre du Bresil entre les gens du pays nommez Tououpinambaoults, & Toupinnkin en langage sauuage & François", which contains numerous phrases in the Tupi language translated into the French language, a discussion of grammar with examples, and a comparative glossary of words in Tupi and French. This edition includes only chants in the Tupi language on p. 130 and 132 and a brief selection of vocabulary in the Tupi and Dutch languages on p. 158, as well as various occasional Tupi words scattered throughout the text.

This edition does not include the woodcuts of Tupi Indians included in the French, and Latin editions, but rather includes the illustrations present in DeBry Grands voyages and include scenes of Indian cannibalizing and dismembering other human beings.
