The facsimile is a letter from Burns to Johnson.

Burns contributed 184 songs, wrote most of the prefaces to the different volumes, and may be said to have edited the 1st edition. The arrangements of the airs were prepared chiefly by Stephen Clarke. cf. Dict. nat. biog., v. 30, p. 16.

Preface, v. 1, signed: David Laing. Notes added to Stenhouse's "Illustrations" by C.K. Sharpe.

Contains, as added title-pages, the title-pages of 1st edition (2d issue): The Scots musical museum ... humbly dedicated to the Society of antiquaries of Scotland ...

Stenhouse's "Illustrations" published separately, 1853.

Includes index.

Dr. James and Dr. Margaret Whitby donation.
