Edition Notes

Colophon, Gg2v: Imprimé à Paris par Benoist Preuost... Pour Gilles Corrozet & Guillaume Cauellat libraires, 1553. Nissen states that Cavellat's name appeared in place of Corrozet's in his portion of the shared edition.

Books 2 and 3 have special title-pages.

Corrozet's device with heart and rose (signed with cross of Lorraine) on main t.p., added t.p. of 3rd vol., and last p. Variant device with pick and shovels on t.p. of 2nd vol. The in-text ill. are mostly of animals, with some plants. Bird's eye view of the Hellespont, v4r. View of Alexandria, A2v. Text in italic, marginalia in roman. Decorated initials from 2 alphabets, one of them criblé, and smaller initials from a 3rd alphabet.

Signatures: ã⁴ ẽ⁴ ĩ⁴ a-z⁴ A-2G⁴.

Includes errata, Gg4r.

Nissen, C. Zoologische Buchillustration, 304

Binding: later marbled paper, half calf, sparse decoration in blind. Red spine label with title in gilt: OBSERVATIONS / DE / BELON. The edges sprinkled red.

Centered on front pastedown is rococo bookplate, perhaps Franks 20498 for Middleton (baronet), "probably the plate of the 3rd baronet, who succeeded 1717 and died 1757." Opposite on free endpaper recto is Theodore Besterman's calligraphic label, signed with initials P.S. At foot of t.p. verso are stamps in black ink reading "Duplicate 1804" and "Mvsevm Britannicvm," with the penciled annotatation "5Be". In right margin of t.p. is 10-line inscription in French, Latin and Greek, dated Feb. 15, 1648; it records the gift of the book by Johannes Ludd, teacher at the Canterbury Royal Grammar School to his pupil Robert Sprakeling.
