The book analyzes the formation of pre-Latin place names (especially in the Northern Italy), that have remote prehistoric origins, derived from some very productive, in the field of 'nomina locorum', "roots" such as * alb-, * war-, * und-, * wond-, * akw-, all related to the concept of water and belonging to a "family" of place names extensive and interconnected in its own different extrinsications. The study also addresses - in the ambit of the so-called Convergence Theory - the problem of the distinction inherent in the possibility of the differentiation in pre-Indo-European and Indo-European linguistic stratus of the "roots" and analyzes for each of them the development, as an example, in the ancient Liguria area.
