A harmless deception led to disaster

Lady Harriet Milborne enjoyed her quiet life in the country. But according to Society, it was time to be presented. She dreaded the trip to London and greatly resented her come-out.

Fortunately, she acquired a new friend who sympathized with her point of view. Mr. Roberts, a country gentleman learning the art of farming on her father's estate, was a very comfortable and agreeable companion whom Harriet found easy to trust. When he offered to accompany her to London to lend her sup-port, she was greatly touched and relieved.

But upon arrival in Town, she was to learn that her trusty friend, Mr. Roberts, had deceived her all along Harriet was so offended, she quite forgot the fact that she had fallen head over ears in love with him.
