Edition Notes

The portrait frontispiece of Charles I, signed "Guil. Marshall delinea: et sculpsit", represents Charles kneeling, with a crown of thorns in his right hand (Madan frontis. 3)

The imprint is false; in fact printed in 1651 in London by W. DuGard for Frances Eglesfield (see Madan 24:first issue and Wing)

Authorship of the Eikōn basilikē was originally attributed to Charles I, but according to Madan (pp. 125-33) it was written by John Gauden, who probably included some authentic writings of the king

The contents of the pages following the "Eikon" are: 1-6 Prayers; 7 Letter, [8-9], Relations; 10 Epitaph, with Greek couplet below. According to Madan 24:first issue, these are followed by 5-8 or 7-10 Reasons (not included in Almack 22). P. 149-324 at end are "the Newcastle Papers" (Almack 22)

Almack says "The 'Eikon' and Prayers do not properly belong to this edition [Almack 22] of the 'Reliquae'", but he includes them in his report. Madan 24 includes only the "Eikon ([6], 268), and the 10 following pages, +5-8 or 7-10

"Eikōn Basilikē. The pourtraicture of His Sacred Majestie in his solitudes and sufferings" has separate title page date 1648; pagination and register are separate. "Praiers, used by His Majestie in the time of his sufferings" has caption title and separate pagination; register is continuous
