Written in a prison cell as he was awaiting execution, Boethius' book became one of the most influential philosophical texts for centuries to come. It is a theodicy (concerned with the problem of how evil can exist in a world made by God) but covers a far wider range than that - justice, virtue, free-will and predestination.
