The use of clinical practice guidelines for knee osteoarthritis by physiotherapists.

Published 2005 .
Written in English.

About the Book

The primary objective of this study was to determine if physiotherapists in Ontario had knowledge of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) and applied them in the management of knee osteoarthritis (OA). Secondary objectives were to compare current management with guideline recommendations, to identify barriers towards implementation, to explore therapists' attitudes regarding CPGs and to identify factors associated with awareness and use of CPGs. A self-administered survey was randomly mailed to 208 physiotherapists registered with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario who had seen a client with knee OA in an outpatient setting within the six months prior to completing the questionnaire. The response rate was 51%. Physiotherapists have a moderate rate of awareness of guidelines in general (65%), and a low rate of usage (14%). These rates drop to 14% for awareness and 5% for usage when applied specifically to the CPGs for knee OA. Awareness of guidelines was associated with working in private practice, being male, and working full-time.
