Provision of an educational colorectal cancer website and subject participation in the Ontario Familial Colorectal Cancer Registry (OFCCR).

Published 2005 .
Written in English.

About the Book

The OFCCR collects information from colorectal cancer cases and their families to be used for colorectal cancer studies. A high response rate is important to reduce bias. A randomized controlled trial (RCT) was conducted to determine if providing an educational colorectal cancer website would increase the response rate to the OFCCR. A 50% random sample (n=384/2) of cases diagnosed between January-November 2003 and invited to participate in the OFCCR received an invitation package, including a family history questionnaire (control group). The other half of cases received the same package plus a unique username and password to log-on to the website (website group). The response rate for the website group (66%) was not statistically significantly higher than the control group's response rate (62%), (p=0.38). However, interpretation of this negative finding is complicated by the unexpected small sample size (N = 403).
