Comparative analysis of prosthetic finger implants.

Published 2005 .
Written in English.

About the Book

Numerical and Experimental studies are conducted to characterize the behaviour of these two implants. Finite element (FE) models are developed to quantitatively assess the internal stresses and deformations. Experiments are conducted to evaluate the required moment to flex/extend the implants and to validate the numerical models.Numerical and experimental results showed excellent agreement. The identified high stress regions observed in the FE models correspond to implant failures observed in clinical studies. Additionally, the motions generated compare to those of cadaveric studies. Outcomes will help surgeons select the type of implant that best suits patient needs.Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a progressive, degenerative disease that affects human joints. In the metacarpophalangeal joint, RA causes inflammation of the joint leading to severe pain, loss of motion and deformity. These damaged joints can be treated by replacement surgery. This research work compares the behaviour of two commonly used implants: Swanson and NeuFlex implants.
