About the Book

Since diabetes induced hyperglycemia renders certain tissues more susceptible to injury, the stress response of diabetic animals was examined. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (280-300g) were used. Western blotting was performed to characterize the levels of hsp72, hsp25 and HSF-1 in skeletal muscles and organs in the diabetic state, as well as following heat stress. Hsp25, hsp72 and HSF-1 content were not significantly altered in the diabetic state. However, 24 hrs following heat stress, the induction of both hsp72 and hsp25 was increased to a greater extent in the heart, kidney, liver and spleen of diabetic heat stressed animals when compared to increases observed in non-diabetic heat stressed animals (p<0.05). A greater HSF activation was also observed in heat shocked diabetic organs. In contrast, in the white gastrocnemius, plantaris, and soleus muscles of diabetic animals after heat stress the increase in hsp25 accumulation was significantly reduced compared to the non-diabetic animals (p<0.05) and was related to the reduced HSF activation.
