A survey of Ontario general dentists and dental specialists to determine attitudes towards the provision of care for persons with disabilities.

Published 2005 .
Written in English.

About the Book

Persons with disabilities (PWDs) can find it difficult to obtain appropriate dental care. The attitudes of dentists are often cited as a contributing factor. This investigation had two goals: (1) to determine the kinds of dental services that are provided to PWDs in Ontario and (2) to determine attitudes of Ontario dentists toward dental care for PWDs.A mail survey was conducted in Ontario in 2003. Questionnaires were mailed to a random sample of 1000 general dentists and to all pediatric dentists licensed to practice in Ontario in 2002. Surveys were returned by 524 general dentists and 83 pediatric dentists, representing a 52 percent and 90 percent response rate, respectively. Eighty-nine percent of general dentist respondents and all pediatric dentist respondents reported treating PWDs. Information was gathered on dentist demographics, practices and the dentist's measure of agreement/disagreement with thirteen statements regarding PWDs using a visual analogue scale (VAS).
