Timely information about a construction project is crucial for project management. Collecting data using traditional, manual ways is costly. Manual data collection is also tedious, prone to error and time-consuming. Automated data collection is a solution for reducing cost and increasing accuracy. In this research, a prototype method for collecting data using digital videos was investigated. For this purpose, digital image processing was used. The data of interest were the cycle-times of a tower crane delivering concrete. Several ways to detect the hopper and the hook were examined. After detecting the hook, an algorithm was developed to calculate cycle-time. The results were promising.
