About the Book

It has been found that calendaring of paper produces very little deformation of the coating layer in the thickness direction. This suggests that there may be in-plane flow of the coating layer, but this phenomenon is not well understood. In this study, the in-plane motion of a coating layer due to calendaring was measured and modeled with finite element analysis (FEA). Coated paper was modeled with ANSYS FE software, and a moving pressure wave calculated from simple contact analysis was applied to simulate the motion of paper inside the calendar nip. To monitor coating flow experimentally, paper was coated with coating color containing a small fraction of colored microspheres. Measurements of microsphere location were taken both before and after calendaring. Results show that the in-plane flow of the coating layer does not significantly contribute to the calendarebility of coated paper.
