About the Book

The CanX-2 nanosatellite, designed, constructed, and tested at the Space Flight Laboratory of UTIAS, represents a revolution in nanosatellites. It's primary mission, to flight test technologies that will enable a formation flying mission on future CanX nanosatellites, is more ambitious than anything previously attempted on a satellite of its size. In addition, CanX-2 carries several science payloads developed by researchers from universities across Canada. The ambitious nature and shear variety of payloads carried on CanX-2 presented a tremendous design challenge to all involved.This thesis describes the design of the structural, thermal control, and deployable subsystems of CanX-2. The development of these subsystems from design through to testing is detailed. This thesis includes not only descriptions of the final designs, but also problems encountered, and mistakes made. It is the hope of the author that this thesis will be used to improve the designs of future nanosatellites designed in SFL.
