About the Book

In this thesis I examine if and how kindergarten teachers in a Northern Ontario city attend to social diversity and inequality within their pedagogy. Using a critical feminist and poststructuralist framework and methodology, I explore whether kindergarten teachers engage with the realities and relevance of social diversity, even if few of these diversities are present among students within their classrooms. Drawing on the interview responses of five kindergarten teachers in relation to existing literature, I explore understandings of feminism, race, gender, class, ability, and language. My analysis makes evident that there is significant pedagogical disparity regarding what is considered appropriate to teach kindergarten-age children about identity, diversity, and notions of difference and sameness. Furthermore, the locations/spaces, populations, and cultural climates within which the schools are located further complicate these dilemmas of teaching.
