The research question for this thesis is: How do women high school teachers who have children negotiate balance between household and workplace so as to attain personal satisfaction in the two main aspects of their lives? The method I undertook to research this topic was to interview eleven female teachers and use secondary resources to place their experiences into a broader context. I employed a snowball technique as a way to be introduced to teachers who might be interested in sharing their experiences. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the role that motherhood and gender expectations play in the decisions of women high school teachers to work and raise a family concurrently. What motivates women to enter the teaching profession allows us to understand why teaching is an attractive career choice for females of any age and, as a result, why women continue to be a significant portion of the staffs of high schools in Ontario.
