Objectives. Determine the association between occupational physical demand (OPD) and arthritis/rheumatism and whether it is modified by age or sex; compare different methods of assessing exposure and; estimate arthritis/rheumatism incidence in the sample.Methods. 10 year follow-up of 6,726 working aged Canadians from the longitudinal panel of the NPHS, free of musculoskeletal conditions at baseline. OPD was assessed using a job exposure matrix (JEM) and individual level data (SPOPD). Diagnosis of arthritis/rheumatism was self reported. Data were analyzed using Cox regression.Results. 920 cases of arthritis/rheumatism were reported. Subjects exposed to high OPD were 40% more likely to develop arthritis/rheumatism (HRR 1.40, 95% CI 1.16--1.69). Neither age nor sex modified this association. Assessing exposure using a JEM, or SPOPD produced similar risk estimates.Conclusion. A statistically significant association exists between OPD and arthritis/rheumatism. Further research is needed to determine if this association is modified by age or sex.
