About the Book

A randomized controlled pilot study (n=39) was conducted to evaluate whether, or not, adding a multi-nutrient fortifier (NE) to human milk (HM) for 12 weeks after hospital discharge contributes to higher growth and nutrient intakes of preterm infants (born 750-1800g, <33 weeks gestation) compared to those fed HM alone (C). Infants in the NE group were heavier, longer and had higher head circumference during the study intervention. Mean protein, zinc, calcium, phosphorus and vitamins A and D intakes were significantly higher in the NE group. Duration (weeks) of HM feeding for C (11.8 +/- 0.7) and NE (11.6 +/- 1.6) was not different as was the percentage of infants exclusively HM feeding (≥ 80% of total feeds) for the C (75%) and NE (53.8%) at 12 weeks. In sum, these results show a growth benefit of adding a multi-nutrient fortifier to HM after discharge. Duration and exclusivity of HM feeding was unaffected by this intervention.
