Popular large content distribution protocols can make use of a peer-to-peer architecture and erasure-correcting coding techniques to yield scalable and robust systems. Calling the encoded data "information droplets," a design goal of such protocols is to create a sea of information droplets with high information content for peers so they can efficiently use the available bandwidth. Simulation results on the decoding dynamics of some existing variable-rate erasure-correcting codes are presented in this thesis, but it is generally an intractable problem to model the entire decoding process. The random linear code used in DropletX, a proposed protocol for efficient cooperative content distribution, is introduced. Analysis shows that the coding scheme results in low transmission overhead and high potential of peers generating innovative information droplets. To offset the computational complexity, strategies are devised to lower or to distribute the encoding and decoding costs.
