About the Book

The effects of the coating formulation, coating weight, and calendering conditions on the average microgloss, microgloss nonuniformity, and surface topography of laboratory coated paper samples were investigated. Seven different kaolin clay pigments and four ground calcium carbonates with various particle size distributions were used as coating pigments. Beckmann's model for smooth surfaces showed limitations to explain the microgloss in terms of surface texture of the samples. However, a relationship based on the Kirchhoff's approach considering the surface texture parameter (Lc/lambda)/(sigma h/lambda)2 was found to be more suitable for the samples studied. The average microgloss correlated strongly with the ratios L c/lambda and (sigma/lambda)2 despite the variations in the pigment size and morphology as well as the calendering conditions. Linear relationships are obtained when plotting the logarithm of the variance of microgloss against the logarithm of the ratio of Lc/lambda and (sigma/lambda)2. However, the linear correlation is strongly dependent on the pigment characteristics.
