About the Book

The work has 224 pages; of these 168 are from Luis Antonio Eguiguren's historical exhibition and the rest of the transcribed documents.
It is one of the first, few and most extensive monographs of the hero Olaya. For this, when, in 1953, the 130 years of his immolation were commemorated; the author received a Gold Medal and Diploma of Honor from the District Council of Chorrillos for his literary work in favor of the Martyr José Olaya. Being Chorrillos, birthplace of the hero.

Besides referring to the Martyr Fisherman of the independence of Peru, Luis Antonio Eguiguren, also deals with the immediate surroundings of the heroic events that Olaya carried out.
In this regard, information on the life and performances of some of the prominent figures in these circumstances are presented: Rodil, Torre Tagle, Riva Agüero for example.
In his exhibition, the author of this work contrasts the actions of Olaya with those of what he calls "pupils of the Real Felipe", that is, of those inhabitants of Lima who chose to seek refuge in that Callao fortress, which was turn into the last realistic bastion of Peru, in front of Brigadier Rodil. They were the climactic moments in which, after the declaration of Independence of Peru in Lima by José de San Martín, the royalist army had not yet been defeated and he appeared in Lima occupying it for a brief period, causing great anxiety among its inhabitants. In this part of the work, the author presents what happened with those who vacillated between the patriotic and realist causes, for the mistake of putting personal interests above a just cause.
"In tremendous antithesis the author puts face to face the behavior of this Fisherman and of those who bowed to realistic orders to preserve their prerogatives." (La Prensa Newspaper, Lima July 1, 1945)
Of particular interest are the data presented, in this work, about the exemplary life of Father Mariluz, who died shot for being consistent with the secrecy of the sacrament of confession that he had to keep according to his Catholic faith.
The author divides his historical exposition on Mártir Olaya and the pupils of Real Felipe in 15 chapters. Section XI has been omitted.
