A coquet turned preacher; or A true copy, of a series of letters, written by Stephen Bemis, to a young lady, in Westminster.

Published 1812 by Printed by Salmon Wilder? in [Leominster, Mass.? .
Written in English.

Edition Notes

The letters are addressed to Lucy Mosman. Bemis is charged in the preface and in a series of questions on p. 16 with breach of promise in ending his relationship with Miss Mosman.

Evans suggests a publication date of 1796, shortly after the letters were written. However, the preface describes Bemis as residing as minister in Harvard, Mass., a position he did not assume until 1801. Bemis, a Federalist in a predominantly Jeffersonian parish, was forced to resign in April of 1813, and it is likely that these letters were published shortly before in an effort to discredit him.
