520 1 $a"In this work, Marla Morris explores "otherness" as experienced by Jewish intellectuals who grapple with anti-Semitism and bureaucratic chaos within the halls of academia. Using a phenomenological and psychoanalytical approach, Morris situates the European Jewish intellectual experience - and estrangement - within the historical context of the Third Reich and the Holocaust. Addressing the conundrum of subjectivity and interiority, Morris examines how the trope of madness (as an extreme state of interiority) is fleshed out, revealing how many Jewish intellectuals have experienced a feeling of being "othered." Morris goes further to argue that the repression of these chaotic emotional states can be detrimental to individual scholars and that the university must become a grounded institution for individuals to flourish."--BOOK JACKET.
