"Although several recent editions of Romeo and Juliet include modern-spelling texts of the first quarto, no edition currently in print presents modern-spelling versions of the first and second quartos in parallel texts. Professor Halio's edition is unique. Using this edition, the reader may see at once how Shakespeare's manuscript of the play, upon which the second quarto is based, was adapted for the Elizabethan stage by the playwright and/or his colleagues."--BOOK JACKET.

Work Description
Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare early in his career about two young Italian star-crossed lovers whose deaths ultimately reconcile their feuding families. It was among Shakespeare's most popular plays during his lifetime and, along with Hamlet, is one of his most frequently performed plays. Today, the title characters are regarded as archetypal young lovers.
Excerpts
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
