DIY Guide to Sharing Your Book

"Just because you signed your rights away long ago, doesn’t mean it has to be the end of the life of the book."

Getting Started with Book Sharing

Greetings! The Internet Archive and Open Library are freely available for you to freely share your digital content. This page is a HOWTO to get you started.

First Steps

Depending on the status of your book, you may need to start at a different point. Which one of these applies to you?

  • My item isn't in Archive.org at all. (Search Archive.org's texts). Start with Uploading.
  • My item is in Archive.org but not freely available. Start with contacting the Internet Archive.
  • My item is available in Archive.org but has no record in Open Library (Search Open Library in the upper left). Start with Creating a Record.
  • My item is available in Archive.org and has a record on Open Library but they are not linked. Start, and finish, with Creating a Link.
  • My issue is complicated and I need to ask a question. Start with our contact form.

Uploading

To upload your book to the Internet Archive you will need to create an Archive.org account which you can do here. Once you log in, the upload page is here. Try to give your item a memorable name and good keywords. It will always be findable from your account.

Creating a Record

To create a record on Open Library follow this link or click Add a Book in the header of any page. You can fill out as much or as little information as you want beyond the basic fields. If you have your Archive ID you can enter it on this page or you can add it later. Make sure you select your name from the author list or add it if it's your first book in Open Library.

Creating a Link between the Archive and Open Library

Once your item is in the Archive, you'll need its Archive ID which is the last part of the item's web address. So for this item for example:

https://archive.org/details/boddingtonsquali1910bodd

the Archive ID is

boddingtonsquali1910bodd

Copy that ID and go to the item's record on Open Library, click the EDIT button in the upper right, scroll down to the ID Numbers section, select Internet Archive from the drop-down menu, add your Archive ID and click Add. Before you move away from this page, make sure you click Save in the lower left.

Once this is completed you should see that the Open Library item has a "read online" link.
