This description if for the book "Recreations in Astronomy With Directions For Practical Experiments And Telescopic Work" by Henry White Warren, D.D.

This description will be ' loosely' written with some extra information. I haven't ever 'edited' an entry on your sight. I just subscribed.

When I entered the title and author in your system, the response was your statement-offer to 'describe' the book. I have written a description below, but before I write a description I would like to point out that there seems to be a conflict in the display results you have listed in your system. One of your entries for Chautauqua Press showed a date of publication as 1879.

It appears the Chautauqua Press published the book in 1886 and 1887.

When I searched the book in WorldCat, I found:

1879 Harper and Bros
1879 Phillips and Hunt
1879 American Book Co (this listing was present the first time I searched WC.
1880 Harper and Bros
1886 Chautauqua Press
1887 Chautauqua Press
1888 Harper and Bros
1892 Harper and Bros
1895 Harper and Bros

I believe a book seller using the internet or anyone referencing the book should write "Chautauqua Press First Edition" if they know that it is not a 'true' First Edition?

Description:
Hardcover. Book bound in a dark brown cloth with a very small pebble look to it (more below*). The front cover has a faint circle stamped just above the center of the cover. The spine shows the first three letters of the title on two lines and the author's initials, last name, plus degree - "D.D." on one line. The bottom of the spine has "Chautauqua Edition" on two lines - all gilded.
The end papers are a light beige. There are 273 illustrations in black and white - some full page, most are in the text.

There are two blank leaves. Instead of a half-title, there is an article which is actually and advertisement. This article-ad is titled "Popular Astronomy" by Simon Newcomb. L.L.D. It is three pages long. At the end of the article-ad is this invitation to buy the Newcomb book for the book Popular Astronomy. "Published by Harper & Brothers, New York. Send by mail, postage prepaid, to any part of the United States, on receipt of $2.50".

Next are two blank pages, and a full page frontispiece.

At the bottom of the title page is "New York, Chautauqua Press ... C.L.S.C. Department ... 805 Broadway ... 1886".

The copyright page shows "Entered according to Act Of Congress, in the year 1879, by Harper and Brothers. In the Office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington".

*It would be very easy for a bookseller to enter the article-advertisement to enter the name Newcomb instead of Warren.

Following the last chapter there is:
Preface (two pages) minus a name or date - then:
Contents - 12
Summary of latest discoveries
Elements
Symbols
Chautauqua Outline, for Students
Glossary and Index.

  • The cloth cover that has the fine pebbly look and feel is imaged in The Bibliography of American Literature (code "C").
