The name "God's Trombones" reflects the authors' awe of the flexibility of an African-American minister's delivery of an evangelistic sermon, using his robust voice to slide up and down the harmonic scale with passion and power, much like the musical progression of a trombone.
Several "sermons" serve as platforms that address bible-based topics, such as "The Creation."
The goal of each of these poem/sermons is to inspire the minister's congregation to be in awe of the power of God and conquer earthly obstacles.
