Reginald, a quirky outcast turned window-peeper, peeps through the windows of his neighbors when the sun goes down and lays bare their secrets. What does he see? Two psycho sisters plotting murder; an out-of-control jazz band; an armless painter painting an armless nude; a husband leaving his wife for a man; and more.

The Bank Street Peeper brings to life a colorful, vibrant street in the heart of Toronto. It’s about the spirit of a people and their love of a neighborhood and how that neighborhood brings them and holds them all together.

Work Description

Reginald Rutley lives on Bank Street. He peeps through the windows of his neighbors when the sun goes down. Sad and lonely, he lives life through the life of others. He is as weird on the inside as he is on the out. What does he see? Two scheming sisters plotting murder; a cheating husband; a basement bootlegger; an armless painter painting an armless nude and more.

But the story is more than just about Reginald peeping through windows, it’s also about the spirit of a people and their love of a neighborhood and how that neighborhood brings them and holds them all together.

Editorial Reviews

“ ... Bank Street, a weird and wonderful place that’s a perfect setting for a modern-day fairy tale or a Fellini film.” -Kim Conklin, All Write in Sin City. (Windsor-Detroit podcast)

“ … the text is full of humour, pathos, bathos and some darker elements. I think this is a splendid piece of work.” -Peter Snell, editor, Vine Leaves Press. (Australia)

“Excellent comedic control and turns of phrase.” -Laurence Edmondson, Storgy Magazine (UK)

Excerpts

Reginald lived on Bank Street, in one of the largest cities in North America. What he liked to do most was spy on his neighbors, peep through their windows when the sun went down. As unlawful as it was, he was good at it, so good hardly anyone ever noticed. He even developed a system of reading people's minds, where he could tell what they were thinking at any given moment. Reginald was weird and he was as much weird on the inside as he was on the out.

I wanted to introduce my main character, Reginald Rutley. It is through his window peeping that the reader comes to learn what is going on on Bank Street. He lays all the street's secrets bare. There's a cheating husband, two murdering sisters, a sex-abuse survivor, an arm-less painter and more.
